Community & civicTeens

More info

Opening reception for Delaney Huxtable's service project, the Mental Health Mailbox, which will be posted in the teen room.

The Mental Health Mailbox, a permanent and interactive installation to the teen room of the library. A Girl Scout Gold Award project, facilitated by Cape Henlopen High School student Delaney Huxtable, The Mental Health Mailbox seeks to introduce an effective coping mechanism and community resources to help support the mental health of teens. The Mailbox encourages the scientifically proven method of expressive writing, to help alleviate stress and improve mental wellbeing.

Those who wish to use the Mailbox can write about what is on their minds in any form they please (letter, story, poem, etc.) before placing it anonymously in the Mailbox as a means of relinquishing a weight off their chest, reducing overwhelming feelings, and easing emotional stress. The Mailbox will be locked to prevent any tampering of the contents and protect the privacy of all those who use it. By writing, one can visually see what is troubling them, safely express their feelings, and consolidate their struggles. Accompanying the Mailbox will be various brochures providing information regarding common mental health struggles and accessible resources. The teen room will also promote books supporting mental health every month that will be available to be checked out of the library.
