Pitt Stop Beer and Wine: A Delmarvalous Delight

A Hidden Gem in Berlin, MD

A few weeks ago, while in search of a meadery in Berlin, we stumbled on the hidden gem of Pitt Stop Beer and Wine just off Rt. 113.

From the outside, Pitt Stop is unassuming, looking like another average local liquor store where you might stop to grab a six-pack or a bottle of wine to go with dinner. It’s when you step inside that the magic happens—Pitt Stop Beer and Wine is not a small liquor store. It’s like stepping into the Tardis, where it’s bigger on the inside than you’d ever expect (small Doctor Who reference for those who know the show!) 

The Wine, The Beer:

The craft beer selection is significant and without compare in Berlin and the surrounding areas. They also have an excellent wine selection, including both local wines and enough variety to please any palate and price point. In the picture below is my husband, Josh, posing next to a selection of Josh wines (which is a very drinkable brand at a wallet-friendly price, if you’re looking for something not too expensive to try!)

The second floor holds a small surprise: a bar! Though the bar was closed during our visit (due to Covid, darn you, Covid), the small glimpses I had showed a cozy and inviting space, where you can get a taste of what’s on tap, fill a growler, and spend a few friendly minutes hanging out. 

The Whiskey:

But where the store shines is in its liquor selection—specifically its whiskey and tequila selections. Specializing in whiskey, the store boasts an entire section dedicated to a variety of unique whiskey, bourbon, and rye. And beyond that section, the store carries a few select bottles of extremely top shelf whiskey (and tequila) behind the counter.

Though I’m sadly not a whiskey/bourbon drinker, I know just enough about it and have visited enough liquor stores to recognize an excellent selection when I see one. And if they don’t have it? Just ask, they may be able to order it for you. 

My Friend Jose:

Here’s where the rubber met the road for me. I’m a tequila snob. I like tequila, and I like good tequila, and I have very specific flavor notes that I look for in tequila that I try. And I’ve traveled the Delmarva area and visited a large variety of liquor stores looking for different tequila to try. My Covid hobby has basically been tequila lol!!

So when I tell you that Pitt Stop Beer and Wine has one of the best take-home tequila selections on Delmarva, I’m in a position to know. Outlet Discount Liquors in Rehoboth is the other with a significant tequila selection. Pitt Stop has an excellent selection, and again, it’s a selection that will fit every budget and palate, from Jose Cuervo Gold, for those looking to relive their college years, to Clase Azul, for those wanting to have a taste of Mexico in a bottle during a time when you may not yet be wanting to travel to Mexico.

Side note: if you’re just looking to taste tequila or have a drink, Tequila Mockingbird in West OC has the best restaurant selection on Delmarva that you can buy by the shot/drink/flight. 

A Delmarvalous Delight!

This store is staffed by friendly, knowledgeable staff who will reach out as you browse to see if you need help finding anything, or need help choosing the right beer, wine, or liquor for your tastes.

While we were browsing the tequila section, one of the employees came over and I asked for a mid-range priced recommendation based on another mid-range priced tequila that’s a standby favorite for me (Avion). He suggested Honor Reposado, which is a brand from Hawaii. Let’s just say that we bought that bottle about a month ago and it’s already gone. It was an excellent recommendation and absolutely on point with what I liked and was looking for!

In short, whether you’re looking for a special whiskey or tequila, or if you’re a craft beer lover looking for a wide variety of choices, or if you need a friendly place to help you choose what to buy, Pitt Stop Beer and Wine is a hidden gem in Berlin, Md., and an absolute Delmarvalous Delight that you should plan on visiting!
