Summer is definitely a time to get outside and enjoy all that Delmarva has to offer. Yes, even in the hot, humid weather. And if you’ve never been to the Wicomico County Fair, definitely make sure it’s on this summer’s checklist.
The Wicomico County Fair sadly had to be canceled last year due to the pandemic. But the Fair is ecstatic to be back in gear for 2021. It’s hard to knock the dust off of a “no fair” year and regain the muscle memory of running fairs, but the team is ready to go.
“We’re really excited to be back and for all to come out and enjoy the fair,” said Zach Evans, Chairman of the Wicomico County Fair. They have planned this year full steam ahead and are ready to welcome you and your family.
In true county fair fashion, you can expect plenty of livestock and entertainment. You’ll find an array of show animals and a petting farm that include goats (yes, even dwarf goats!), pigs, sheep, cows and more. Be ready for a little competition with mounted competitions, cattle and goat shows and a rodeo. The 4-H competitions are one of Zach's favorites. “The kids work hard all year long to raise the animals, it’s exciting to see the end result,” he said.
You’ll find another authentic county fair aspect throughout the fair … food. Come hungry and chow down on Lions Club chicken, Turkish delights, fried Oreos, Kings Hawaiian goodies, lemonade, snow cones, ice cream and more.
On Saturday, you do not want to miss the Wing War: Hot Wing Eating Competition. It’s not for the faint at heart. Where most of the population maxes out at spicy, that’s where these challengers begin. This wing war is hardcore too; Contestants aren’t permitted to use drinks, utensils or napkins during the competition. Can you see the red faces and steaming ears yet? The winner gets a milkshake as a prize, along with a trophy, a gift card to Buffalo Wild Wings and pure bragging rights.
There is literally something for everyone.
Friday night starts off the fair weekend with a bang. After the ribbon-cutting ceremony, set out to enjoy some livestock shows, hayrides, a rodeo, live music and plenty of food. The Little Miss Pageant will be going on Friday night as well. The Pete Richardson Memorial Cake Auction will be happening as well. The night ends with a bang as well with fireworks from presenting sponsor by Perdue.
The fun continues on Saturday with numerous attractions including a tractor pull, Jeep and bike show and a car show. More livestock, a petting farm and hayrides will be available. The rodeo will be going in the morning and early afternoon. Then they will transition to the Mason Dixon Deputies Mounted Shooting competition. There will be local live music all day long and the food options will be extensive — prepare for lunch and dinner al fresco at the fair! Don't forget the Wing War: Hot Wing Eating Competition.
“Don’t be scared to come both days. Friday is a fun family night. Saturday involves a lot of competitions. You’ll have two different experiences depending on the day,” said Zach.
Start the day off with a run! There’s a 5K you can participate in called Chase the Chicken. If you can beat the runner in the chicken suit, you get a prize! The Mason Dixon Deputies will perform again on Sunday so be sure to grab a seat up close to catch the show. Go around round through the fair to the livestock, petting farm, try out axe throwing and check out the Carriage House for the University of Maryland Extension program displays.
Don’t let another year go by without checking out the Wicomico County Fair. It’s an event close to the heart of Delmarva. A true Eastern Shore gem. Grab the kids, grab the family, put on your walking shoes and some sunscreen, and we’ll see you at the fair!
