Run for Pie in Vienna

By Michelle Nelson

October 13, 2022

Fall brings cooler temperatures perfect for running and eating pie. Eating pie? That’s not typical race food but when Mandala Pies of Vienna, Maryland is hosting the event, everyone will be running for pie!

The second annual Race Through Historic Vienna 5k is set for Saturday morning, Nov. 5 at the bakery. Vienna is a small town halfway between Salisbury and Cambridge, and boasts Captain John Smith as a visitor in the 1600s when he explored the Chesapeake Bay. The artisan bakeshop’s owner, Caitlin LaComb, wants people to know about the town, support the community, and get exercise all at the same time.

“A lot of people don’t know that Vienna, Maryland, exists and I’m a huge fan of running,” LaComb said. “I feel like moving your body outside is a great way to build community.”

The 5K (3.1 miles) starts at the shop at 9:30 a.m. and runs by the Nanticoke River waterfront, past historic homes and back to the shop. You can see the Route 50 Vienna bridge from the boardwalk and slices of pie will be waiting for runners upon their return. The shop has onsite parking and is easy to get to, located only a few minutes off Route 50.

You'll run this boardwalk along the race course.

Registration is open and while you can sign up in person the day of the race, runners are encouraged to sign up by this Friday, Oct. 14, to be guaranteed a t-shirt and swag bag. A virtual option is also available, if you’d like to support the bakery but can’t run in person.

“Everything helps because so much of it is extra exposure for the town of Vienna,” LaComb said. That’s why the event shirt and the finisher’s medal both say Vienna, she explained. People will look at that and remember the quaint Eastern Shore town. “Now my goal is not just a community building event but to get people to plan a trip back,” she said. Mandala Pies just celebrated its second year in business, but LaComb had the idea for the 5k before she even opened the shop.

All ages, runners and walkers are invited to participate, and the course is stroller friendly. Children 4 and under are free. To register, visit https://runsignup.com/.../Vienna/RaceThroughHistoricVienna5K

The event attracted almost 150 participants last year. There will also be booths set up after the race and sponsorships are still available. Contact LaComb at mandalapies@gmail.com for information.

Now get to training because they will be doing a lot of baking! They bake “beautiful pies for beautiful people” and they will have plenty to share with the community on Nov. 5. See their website about all their pie varieties and for information on their Vienna location and their newly opened Berlin shop. http://www.beautifulpiesforbeautifulpeople.com

The bakery will be open during the event and slices and whole pies will be for sale. Check their website for the varieties available and enjoy the mouth-watering pictures. They are also taking orders for Thanksgiving, with delivery at both locations.
