This is a love letter to my chiropractor, Dr. Michael Liang of Chesapeake Chiropractic in Salisbury. I know people are suspicious of chiropractors for some reason, and when you think about chiropractors, you may have strange ideas about how they adjust your back or your neck, and maybe you think that’s all they do. Or perhaps you had a bad chiropractor once (they exist, like bad doctors, bad dentists and bad service at a restaurant) but that doesn’t make them all bad, it means wrong one for you!
First, this isn’t an informational post, like I said, it’s a love letter, but I do want to clarify that chiropractors do sooo much more than just make back and neck adjustments (though I’m sure grateful weekly for my chiropractor and those adjustments) but they also work on other parts of the musculoskeletal system. If you’re having difficulties with knees, shoulders, hands, feet, tension headaches, and more, a chiropractor can sometimes offer pain relief, adjustments and advice on further treatment.
So for the past few months, I’ve been having terrible pain in my ankles and feet, especially in the morning or any time I was sitting for a period of time. I’m only 46, but I wondered if this was the beginning of some sort of early onset arthritis or autoimmune disease. Of course, I made an appointment with my doctor and that appointment ended up being…less than stellar. She asked some questions, looked at my ankles, ordered some bloodwork and x-rays and said, “well, yeah, it could be arthritis”, gave me a non-verbal “sucks for you” look and sent me on my way. That was it. No suggestions (oh, lose weight). Yikes! Not what you want to have happen at any age, let alone when you’re only in your 40s.
I happened to see Dr. Liang, my chiropractor, later that week (okay, I have a standing weekly appointment for an adjustment) and mentioned my issues to him. He immediately said, “Sounds like plantar fasciitis, I can totally help with that” and HE DID. He had me take off my socks and shoes, made some adjustments in my ankle/feet and the pain was gone. HOLY CRAP. He’s magic. I’m pretty sure many chiropractors are magic but mine especially is because he did more for me in 5 minutes than my doctor did. Not only did he do the adjustment, he made other suggestions for things I could do at home, suggested an ongoing treatment plan, and gave me a potential outlook.
I don’t actually expect doctors to perform miracles, or magic, but what Dr. Liang did felt magical because he listened and offered treatment and options. Isn’t that what we hope for in a medical professional? Someone who will listen, be reasonable with us, help reduce our pain if they can, offer practical suggestions, and follow up!
Dr. Liang’s chiropractic office is small, as he’s the sole chiropractor, and he has one office staff person. Hi, Megan! Dr. Liang and Megan create a casual, friendly environment, with flexible scheduling, there’s only ever a few patients in the office at a time, service is usually prompt and basically, it’s a laidback atmosphere and makes you feel unstressed to be there, despite your pain.
If you’re experiencing pain or issues with your musculoskeletal system and need a chiropractor (here's some suggestions for when a chiropractor may be able to help), I can absolutely recommend Dr. Michael Liang at Chesapeake Chiropractic as someone to have a consult with!
As an end note, we actually had a chiropractor do an article about plantar fasciitis here on Shop Local Delmarva a few weeks ago. Check that out too!
This business is a Shop Local Delmarvalous Delight and I highly recommend it!
