Chefs For Habitat Fundraises for a Great Cause

By Michelle Nelson

February 8, 2022

Everyone needs a decent place to live, and Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County is creatively raising funds to see that happen.

In its 11th year, the Chefs for Habitat Charity Event,  https://chefsforhabitat.org/ will feature food prepared by local chefs, along with live and silent auctions and live music. Between the cancellation of the event last year and rising construction prices, funds are greatly needed to help make housing more affordable for local families. Tickets for the gala are already sold out, as well as sponsor slots. But there is plenty for the community to do to support the gala.

The event on Saturday, Feb. 19 at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center will feature specialties from 14 chefs, and announcement of the winner of the "celebrity sous chef" competition with 9 members of the community. Since the new year started, the "sous chefs" have been fundraising, mainly through social media, vying for top honors for who raises the most. Each one has a dedicated link,
https://chefsforhabitat.org/celebrity-sous-chefs/, where you can track the competition and make donations. Kindness commissioners Grace Murdock and Martin Hutchison have a friendly contest going, with Grace's goal to raise "$100 more than Martin!" Salisbury resident and sourdough bread baker Rosa Rivera is in the top spot so far, with just over 2 weeks to go!

Celebrity chefs include names well known to readers of Shop Local Delmarva, such as Stewart Davis from Flannery's; Heather Hall and Shaina Bounds, the owners of The Ugly Pie, and Susan Schaff, owner of Cake Art. See the complete listing here,
https://chefsforhabitat.org/chefs/. The entire event is all about local businesses and individuals raising money for homes to be built right here in Salisbury.

Habitat for Humanity has three guiding principles: Homes must be simple, decent and affordable.

Christina Williams, director of development for Habitat, explains that when people are spending the majority of their income on rent, it is nearly impossible to save and plan for expenses such as college. Owning a Habitat home can help break the cycle of poverty, Williams said, and at this year's gala, a local family who is a success story will be speaking. The family, after moving into a Habitat home, has saved and put their five children through college, the last one currently a freshman. Besides building homes, Habitat offers rental assistance, roofing help, and helps homeowners stay in their current homes through the "Aging in Place" program, with grants available for critical repairs.

The numbers are astounding. Since 2020, 1,548 individuals have been saved from eviction thanks to Habitat's efforts, and 133 construction programs have been completed. More than 71 homes have been built since 1987, with several under construction or planned for the near future. Most homes are in the Church Street neighborhood, with a few on the west side.

Will Delmarva surpass this amount in 2022?

By the numbers: Habitat has prevented

more than 1,500 individuals from being evicted since 2020.

How can the community help the mission of Habitat for Humanity?

First, support the Celebrity Chef Gala. Check out the online auction listings (make sure to click on each one to see the description) https://chefsforhabitat.org/auction/ and contact Habitat if you or your businesses have a donation for the auction. Second, make donations to the chefs in training. Third, continue to support Restore, the local shop on Isabella Street filled with all sorts of housing items. Restore accepts donations of building supplies and household goods, with profits all going to the mission of building affordable homes. https://www.wicomicohabitat.org/restore/

Another way to support Habitat is through volunteering. Spend some time on their website reading about the options available, whether it's donating office supplies, construction materials, or helping on a building project. Kindness will continue to propel the community forward! https://www.wicomicohabitat.org/

The store on West Isabella Street accepts and sells a variety of household goods. It's open Tuesday - Saturday.

Projects depend on donations for basic supplies.
