Meaningless recommendations

Can you recommend a good plumber?

Plumber - TYIA!  It really drives me nuts when I see a post like this. Lazy and will get lazy responses. Ask if anyone can recommend a plumber that they have used that is around Ocean City. On the other hand it drives me even more crazy when I see Can anyone recommend a plumber that can come out between 2-2:30 today that won't break the bank, and isn't scared of dogs or cats, and likes pineapple pizza! I mean it is one thing to ask about a specialty such as someone who is familiar with plumbing for hot water baseboard heating around Snow Hill for example. But come on some of the things people are asking there are really not too many people that will know and you invite some pretty smart remarks.

A couple others that really do a great job of getting people started on the crazy comments...break the bank or cheap. Two other things that shouldn't be on any request. What you should be asking is if they are licensed and insured and people who will do the work correctly. More on that later.

When I recommend someone

Again, I normally will only recommend someone I have had a personal experience with or know several people who have had great experiences with. And if I have never dealt with the person myself I always disclose that. It amazes me how many people toss out names because they are friends or something but they have never used the person. There are many other reasons people might send people in a certain direction and many other motivators. I will tell you mine...they will take care of you and treat you right.

I had some work being done around our house awhile back that led to another little issue that I was going to need to have corrected. This other issue wasn't a big deal and I knew I could rack my brain and figure out who I could get to do it. But I asked the guy who was doing the work at our home who would you use...this is what you do all the time? Without hesitation he told me and told me why. I picked up the phone and called the guy and had him meet me at the house. He listened to what I was telling him and he said you don't really want to do that do you? I told him not really I didn't think cosmetically it would look great. He said well if it were me this is what I would do. I told him that he was reading my mind...we went that direction and it looked great.

Now since then I have used him for 3 other jobs around our home. Do you want to know something funny? When I called him about one of the last ones. He went out there to look at it and he knew it was a bigger project. He said look for me to do it, it won't be cheap but it will be done right and you will never have to worry about it again. I said right back to him that is why I am calling you because I want it done right. I never asked for a price and when he handed me the bill I never questioned it. I have recommended him and explained exactly why I will recommend him.

Good isn't cheap, and cheap isn't good

That's an old saying and here is another one from Henry Ford. "Quality means doing it right when no one is looking" Knowing someone is going to do it the right way and not just the quickest or easiest way, or cheapest way really should be what we are all looking for when it comes to recommendations. The situation above I would have no way of knowing if he did a temporary fix and charged me top dollar for it. Just to have issues down the road. It happens all the time. No one wants to have something fixed just to have to deal with it again. If having quality work done by a professional who is an expert in their trade you can't expect it to be cheap. And you shouldn't want it to be cheap either.
