Breastfeeding isn’t always easy, and there may be times when you have had it hurt. While breastfeeding (when going well) shouldn’t hurt, there are a few common reasons why it may be painful:
Shallow latches are when your baby is only nursing on your nipple instead of further back on your areola. To help improve the latch, you want to have your baby facing you (their tummy on your tummy) and their nose will be looking at your nipple.
Always bring your baby to you, their chin will hit your breast first, then the top lip will hit the breast last (It should feel a bit like an up and over movement).
When your baby starts nursing it should feel like a tugging sensation. Remember although nipples heal quickly, if you have nipple damage, it will take several days to heal even with a deep latch.
Reaching out to a lactation consultant early in the process will help you have a happy and healthy breastfeeding relationship.
Rebecca Gravenor of The Village Lactation would love to assist you with any questions or concerns you may have. She is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant whose passion is to Help all families of the Eastern Shore succeed in their breastfeeding dream.
