It is no surprise that back pain and degenerative disorders occur as we age, so this is a great question. Surgery should be a “last resort” option in a treatment plan, as it can be very evasive and complications can occur. Fortunately, there are chiropractic techniques that aim to relieve the pressure within the discs without any surgical interventions. The flexion motion at the hip joint, while stretching surrounding muscle groups, alleviates pressure off the spinal discs, which are gel-like cushions between the vertebrae of your spine; creating negative pressure in the disc, like a vacuum. Negative Pressure is critical because it is what allows the jelly center (the Nucleus Pulposus) to be 'sucked' back inside a stretched or torn Annulus (the ligamentous rings that keep the jelly center in place). The Cox Technic also allows the spinal canal area to open by approximately 25%, widening the space between the vertebrae, making more room for the spinal nerves to correctly align. This allows the flow of cerebral spinal fluid to lubricate damaged areas. Here, we will explain the benefits of the Cox Technic that many chiropractors use in their treatment plans.
The Cox Technic, also known as, Flexion Distraction and Decompression is a gentle, non-force chiropractic adjusting approach. With the use of a specialized table that moves in normal spinal ranges of motion, your trained chiropractor is able to open compressed spinal disc spaces, traction the spine and reduce pressure on nerve tissue and other spinal structures.
