What do our young adults think of local businesses?

We have so many great small businesses in our area and my family tries to support as many as we can. A few examples: the staff at Williams Market will personally help you pick the sweetest watermelon; the ladies at Uniforms Unlimited know my Dad by name; and Hebron Pizza is always ready with dinner when Mom’s too tired to cook. Supporting these small businesses is an important way to strengthen our community. In return, these businesses are help tie our community together and give back in ways that larger businesses just aren’t able to.

That is just a small part of one of the entries that we had in our Shop Local Delmarva Scholarship that ran last month and below I am going to share several more with you too.

We will announce a winner by the end of the month. To decide on a winner for the first scholarship I put together a panel made up of 5 people to each read all of the entries and select their favorite. And the student that gets the most votes will be awarded $1000.00 from Shop Local Delmarva! I will not have a vote because I would have to make them all winners and well we would be broke! :) But keep in mind this opportunity is available because of our Supporters, Partners, and our Sponsors of Shop Local Delmarva!

Helping to select our winner we have Laurelei Swinehart, Joe Stonell, Angie James, Michelle Nelson, and Michael Alford. I have given them a really difficult job because I have read all of these and they have their work cut out in deciding a winner. And I really appreciate their help in doing this.

Now here are just a few more excerpts from more of our entries that put a smile on my face. The first one got my attention with I love food! I love food too!

I love food, so when I think about small businesses my mind goes straight to all the amazing restaurants and sweet treat spots we have here on Delmarva. If I had to choose, some of my favorite restaurants would be Barn 34 in Ocean City and BackStreet Grill in Salisbury. These two have been my go-to spots for years. In my opinion Back Street Girl has the best home-cut fries and honey mustard. So if you haven't checked it out yet you need to!!! For Sweet treats, I love to go to Snow Biz in Princess Anne, Corner Bakery in Onancock, Virginia, and Sugar Rush in Salisbury. There are many things that these small businesses do for the community besides giving the local people amazing places to eat. The biggest thing would be helping the economy.

And another one:

The reason why local businesses are important is because they have a soul. They care about the community around them, and they have a local identity. A local business is forged with the sweat and tears of local townspeople to help their community and to give it something great. A local business is made with the idea of giving to a community; a community that helped them, employed them, and

maybe even raised them. Local businesses are made by people just like you or me, working day to day, hour to hour, just to give back to the community that gave so much to them.

And another part of an entry for you to read.

The community uses the local business support to provide

events that bring people together, such as Third Friday and the Folk festival. As someone that has family that has owned, grown, and worked for local businesses within our community, I have seen the importance of the local business industry first-hand. It is because of these local businesses and their support that our community thrives.

These kids get it! Maybe I will share a few more with you next week!!

Share your positive, wonderful experiences with us, share our group with your friends and invite them to be part of Shop Local Delmarva!!

Our Shop Local Delmarva Scholarship

We are reviewing the submissions for our Shop Local Delmarva Scholarship for $1,000 made possible by our Supporters, Partners, and Sponsors. We will announce the winner by the end of September.

And don't forget our Supporters, Partners, and Sponsors.

You may notice certain businesses are highlighted and standout not only in the directory but we highlight them on our Facebook Page as well as our group. This ever growing list of businesses help us promote  a lot of great things in our community. Many of our blogs which you can find right here are focused on our community and our local businesses.

Many of these businesses are helping us promote other local businesses. Which really is what Delmarva is all about. I am asked quite often how a business can be part of Shop Local Delmarva. If you are part of our group you are part of Shop Local Delmarva. If you like the group and like the concept of a digital type of media that we share blogs, videos, highlights and features and want to be part of it we would love to have your support. You can find out more information here. All of our supporters, partners, and sponsors are on the rotating banners on most of our blogs just like this one.

If any of our supporters, partners, or sponsors have upcoming events we encourage them to let us know so we can help them promote them as well.

The whole idea of Shop Local Delmarva is all about our local community supporting local businesses, and our local businesses supporting our local community. It goes round and round.
