Sometimes I Skim Read

The other day I got a email from one of our many companies explaining they have finally started allowing us to take credit card payments. I was so excited I forwarded the email to everyone in the office saying finally!!

To add a bit more detail why I was so excited this particular company would now allow credit card payments on certain policies but not on others. Well think about it. It could be difficult and confusing explaining this to people when they call to make payments and even remembering which ones they take and which ones they don't.

And I actually played a key role in getting this particular company to even accept credit cards at all. I sat in a meeting questioning it with the president of the company over a lunch I had gone on and on about it so much he looked at me and told me we will absolutely address this. I said that I had one more question and he reluctantly agreed to let me ask.  I asked him how do you plan on paying for the hotel rooms and also the food and conference room? He looked at me and said with a credit card. I said thought so now just imagine them telling you they don’t accept credit cards. Trust me he got my point.

So overrun with joy about this particular company expanding the credit card option now to these final accounts, well it was the final step. Well darn I skim read the email! I got two emails back that it wasn’t available in MD though? I went back and in the last couple sentences it stated that this wasn’t approved in MD yet. So I immediately fired off an email to my rep and said OK so DE, VA but not MD?? I got an email right back trust me we are working on it and hopefully soon.

Just like everyone I get a ton of emails and messages. And I will be honest I skim read a ton of them. So many of them are just junk and it is delete, delete, delete. But I have caught myself a time or two deleting something as I’m reading it and realizing I didn’t want to delete that. Right before I started working on this I had two screens open, taking a phone call, saw two notifications regarding the group. I pulled them up on another window and approved, then approved. 2 minutes later I get a message from Angie asking me why I approved that one? LOL I told her well I didn't really read it all that well obviously.  I know I am not alone.

At the office we get a ton of calls from people who we have emailed and covered their exact concerns they are calling about just to find out they don’t read the emails? The same people many times don’t open their mail. Or even listen to their voicemails. It really has gotten to a point where it is hard to communicate with people even thought there are so many forms to communicate. But I can tell you absolutely for sure that will cause people to pay attention, when they notice that their bill changes.

My whole point with this blog is, I get it. I get it when I start reading an email and am like delete, read the next couple sentences delete. But when it is something important we all need to slow down and read it or something new I have been doing. Deleting all the junk first then going back to the ones I saved. Which seems to help me out a ton!

I hope you have a Happy 4th of July!!

David
