It's time for an update on kindSBY! It's been a busy year of supporting teachers and schools but we are not done yet!
Our biggest project, the Adopt a School program, has been an enormous success. The community certainly answered the call when we asked for adopters for all the public schools in Wicomico County. Civic groups, city departments, businesses and individuals all supported our schools.
The last of four treats are being delivered and our adopters have been creative! Projects include the Ward Museum gifting wildflower seed packets and chocolate eggs to the teachers at Pittsville Elementary and Middle, and Susan Warthen, a realtor from Long and Foster, treating Fruitland Primary and Intermediate schools to an ice cream bar. Susan is also one of our Kindness Commissioners. Check out the

Wicomico County's annual Teacher of the Year Spring Celebration was held recently at Kylan Barn in Delmar, Md. and because of your donations, #kindSBY was able to give beautifully wrapped towers of books to the four finalists. Grace Foxwell Murdock, head of the city's kindness commission, presented books to teachers Paige Baker (Prince Street Elementary), Kimberly Fitzgerald (James M. Bennett High), Rebecca Mathews (Wicomico High) and Miranda Ebeling (Special Programs, English Language Support Center). Mrs. Mathews, a science teacher and in her eighth year of teaching, was named the 2021-22 Teacher of the Year that evening. Congratulations! For a full list of the semifinalists from each school and the four rising stars (teachers in their second year), see

Our last big project for education is a book drive for all the public school libraries in the county. #kindSBY has chosen titles on kindness, diversity and uniqueness for students from preschool through high school. Kindness Commissioners will meet soon to package approximately 250 books into groups of 10, then delivering them to each school in May. Minuteman Press in Salisbury, a Kindness Champion sponsor, has printed #kindSBY stickers for us to attach to the inside covers. While the books are specifically for students, we all know the ripples of kindness can extend far beyond the initial receiver! Students, their families, and the community all benefit when kindness is the lesson.

Thank you, Shop Local Delmarva, for partnering with us! The success of all these endeavors is why we continue to be the 1st World Kindness USA City!
