I had the privilege of attending a packing party recently for Operation We Care, when several hundred care packages were prepared to send to soldiers overseas. I was there with Kind SBY. I had seen on FB all the good work Operation We Care does but seeing it in person was incredible! Individuals, families, businesses, elected officials, and community leaders all came together for this effort. Before the packing began, founder Jeff Merritt of Minute Man Press, thanked all who make these events possible. and it was a long list that went on for quite a while!
According to their website, OWC ships about 2,000 care packages a year to the military. During the pandemic, they also prepared boxes for local hospital staff.
To pack boxes, people followed an organized line around the perimeter of the room, piling everything in quickly. Then each person went to a table, dumped everything out and packed it tightly, filling every bit of space. Next was the table to get the inserts, explaining who the package was from, along with notes from school children, and then gave the box to the next volunteers to tape. Another volunteer attaches address labels, and a team of people fill out the shipping labels for customs. Boxes are then stacked and loaded into a truck. We can read about something, but it always gives a fuller perspective to participate in the experience.
My dear daughter Julie did the packing for us, while I took pictures, and I'm grateful she was able to see the effort that went in to supporting our military. I can't drive right now but that has been a blessing because of things like this.
Check out their page, Operation We Care, and also https://www.operationwecare.org for donations needed and how you can be involved. Maybe your family, organization or business can set up a campaign to collect items for July 4th and Operation We Care can use them for their next packing event!
