Help Wanted

One of the most common conversations I have today with business owners is how they still are not able to find people to fill positions. I really try to take the time and listen but I have heard it so many times and it seems like they are all saying the same thing. From talking to a number of small business owners this can be one of the hardest things about running a business today. Couple that with the increase in cost of everything about running a business it can be enough to just throw your hands up. And I have heard more than a few say I am not sure how much longer I can do this.

We have a number of businesses that post help wanted or positions that they have available each week to our group. And we try to highlight when one of our supporters, partners, or sponsors of Shop Local Delmarva is looking for them too. Most of these posts have some interaction a couple people will tag someone. I have heard of more than a few people that have found someone using our group. And that is great...it is not something that I expected or planned on our group helping our community with but it has.

New Hire

When most places hire someone they are making an investment into that individual. It can create strain on the other coworkers having to stop what they are doing to help someone new learn the ropes. But we were all new once right? This is an investment to benefit the business as well. Why else would you do it?

This investment of resources, time and money for them to teach you how the business operates. In many businesses it can take a long time for someone new to pick up everything they are getting thrown at them. Not all coworkers are good at training people. And not all people have the same strengths and weaknesses. Not everyone learns as fast as everyone else. Some questions will need to be answered more than once.

And things don't always workout. Although this blog isn't about my business at all. This has happened to me more than once where a person I hired and I thought was going to be perfect, ended up not working out. When this happens I always try to make sure I treat people fairly and the way I would want to be treated in that same situation. This is a small area and I don't want hard feelings over something like that. And that doesn't always happen.

My point is that when offered a job that is an investment in you. And learning is how you make yourself more valuable.

Two Weeks

Two weeks is not near enough time for most businesses to hire someone new and have them up to speed. But when things don't workout and you are the one ending it at least leave your employer with two weeks.

Burning bridges is not a great idea in an area like this. And you would be amazed how many business owners chat back and forth with each other. You may find yourself needing or wanting to go back or wanting a reference from your previous employer.

And don't forget our Supporters, Partners, and Sponsors.

You may notice certain businesses are highlighted and standout not only in the directory but we highlight them on our Facebook Page as well as our group. This ever growing list of businesses help us promote  a lot of great things in our community. Many of our blogs which you can find right here are focused on our community and our local businesses.

Many of these businesses are helping us promote other local businesses. Which really is what Delmarva is all about. I am asked quite often how a business can be part of Shop Local Delmarva. If you are part of our group you are part of Shop Local Delmarva. If you like the group and like the concept of a digital type of media that we share blogs, videos, highlights and features and want to be part of it we would love to have your support. You can find out more information here. All of our supporters, partners, and sponsors are on the rotating banners on most of our blogs just like this one.

If any of our supporters, partners, or sponsors have upcoming events we encourage them to let us know so we can help them promote them as well.

The whole idea of Shop Local Delmarva is all about our local community supporting local businesses, and our local businesses supporting our local community. It goes round and round.
