Growing a Business

Good Morning Shop Local Delmarva! Here’s one for you. I saw this awhile back and I saved this photo to my phone. This is probably one of the hardest things to wrap your mind around as a business owner. When is enough, enough? How much more do you want to grow? Or are you satisfied and happy where you are?

I had a conversation with a couple people lately about this very topic. Having the motivation to go into debt, or use resources to grow can be a scary thing even when things are going well. With all the uncertainty that we all face and the increase in prices of everything it seems to me that there is less motivation to expand or grow businesses. I could be wrong but that is certainly how I have felt lately.

It costs money and more importantly time to grow or start a business. When you put your time, energy, and money into a business it is an investment. And each time you grow or expand it costs more time, money and effort. Each time you increase your staff it will be an investment of time and energy and with the high turnover that so many employers are seeing it is often not worth the investment.

When it starts to seem as if you are penalized and not rewarded for success the motivation to grow is no longer there. And it certainly would be easier to just have one boat and not a fleet.

So many people have no idea of the costs associated with running a business. They see someone who is successful and want to take the quick way to get there. I’ve met more than a few people from our group that I have watched over the past few years that seem to be after the get rich quick plan. Always looking for the easy way to do it. Or trying to be involved in everything. Or offering advice in an area that it is easy to tell they know nothing about. These are the same people who try to appear successful and offer little value back.

Most of the very successful people have worked for years and years and they didn’t build their business overnight. And the ones that are the best have become the best because of the time they have spent doing it. I have gotten to know quite a few of them too.

Happy Monday that fisherman sure is a pretty smart guy.
