Giftbags for Seniors... The Kindness Zone

By Michelle Nelson

March 2, 2022

Here's an opportunity for everyone to help with:

Chocolate is practically a universal gift; it has a way of making everyone happy! That's why kindSBY is including little bags of Hershey's Kisses in the gift bags we are packing for senior citizens. During the next two weeks, we are collecting items to fill 400 bags for MAC Inc., Area Agency on Aging. The gift bags will be distributed by MAC through the Meals and Wheels Program as a little something extra to bring joy!

This is where we need you, our Shop Local Delmarva community, to partner with us in providing gifts to include in the bags. We have suggestions, but think of anything an older person might enjoy. I've heard it suggested to think of things you might give to aging parents if you were visiting. Ideas include mini sizes of toiletries, playing cards, pens, pads of paper, and individually wrapped candies. Activity books and chapsticks are also welcome.

Local businesses, if you have extra branded products, such as notepads and pens, anything that's on your giveaway shelf, this is an excellent way to use those items! Maybe you don't have enough for your next big giveaway, so donate them to kindSBY. We want to recognize Gamee Elliott at State Farm and David Galeone of Gary Marshall Insurance for their donations. Items can be dropped of at Benjamin's Wear It Again, 720 E. College Ave., Salisbury. Thank you, Benjamin's, for supporting every initiative of kindSBY. The mission of kindSBY is to create, recognize and inspire kindness and none of that is possible without support. The deadline for donations is Friday, March 18. The Kindness Commissioners will meet that weekend for a big packing party.

A clever idea from a fairly new local business, Let's Get Lit Candle Studio in Princess Anne, is giving $3 off the candle of your choice if customers take in a donation for the gift bags. Thank you, Let's Get Lit!

For those of you who prefer online shopping, here's a link to an Amazon wishlist for the project. This makes donations extra easy!

This is only one of several projects in the works in the first official kindness city. Be sure to follow kindSBY for news on our initiatives, as well as seeing kindness highlighted in the community.

Let's do everything we can to spread kindness in our community and beyond. When people hear the name Salisbury, we want it associated with kindness and our place as the first city in the United States to be an official kindness city.

Tag #kindSBY when you share your kindness, too, on social media. Share the positive!
