Messages, Emails, Text, Calls

I have seen a post going around and a few people in business have shared it. It is kind of funny and I can relate. The post says "There's a couple people I'd really love to text message back and forth, on a Sunday, 37 times on a $25 project."

Who emails and text people on a Sunday? You'd be surprised how many people do, and a lot of people who send these types of messages do not even think for a minute there is anything wrong with it. If you are friends with someone and you send them a business related question after hours do you ever stop to think, would I want someone worrying me about something work related while I am off or at home? Probably not.

I have gotten slightly better about this but depending on the situation I may not message the person back or respond to the email until the next business day. Emails I don't really have an issue with but it is when an answer is expected right away from the email. I have one customer who it seems like almost every holiday he emails me with a question. I used to try to take care of whatever he needed and then I realized that I am letting him think that I don't mind or that I need to respond back to him like this. And guess what lately I have just letting him know I will look it over and get back in touch on the next business day. So emails aren't really as intrusive however sending someone a text, or a FB message or calling them on Sunday is a bit uncalled for unless it is a real emergency or that is their normal business hours.

I had a guy call me one Sunday morning at around 6:30 am. I had actually just started a run. I looked at the phone and at first I was going to send it to VM. Then I felt like wow this must be really important if he is calling me at this hour and I should take the call so I did. I said hello and was met with I didn't expect you to answer. And I replied back with well then why would you call my cell phone. He said well I had a question about my car insurance. I got kind of pissed and let him know that it was not acceptable to call me about a general question about his car insurance at 6:30 on a Sunday morning and actually I questioned how he got my number at all. I found out that he got it from another friend of his that I didn't even know that well that got it from her place of employment. Now I was even more pissed. I let him know if his house had caught on fire, or if he had been in an accident that would have been different but not to ever call me about something like this and please delete my cellphone number from your phone since you have no boundaries and the way you got it wasn't acceptable either. It was from a place that my kids went and our numbers were listed as emergency contacts.  He stuttered an apology and I hung up. I was pretty mad the rest of the morning that someone would do that. But guess what he isn't alone it happens more than you think.

Now I have spent hours on a Sunday before helping someone with a claim or if I see an email or a message that is more urgent I normally will try if I can to take care of it. And I get a lot of people who thank me for getting right back or I know they sincerely appreciated my help. Neither of these people would ever take advantage of the situation and call about something that was more of a general question. Facebook messages, and text messages, or one of the many other ways people can reach you.

And I have messaged some people after hours when I have had an urgent need and I start it right off with I am really sorry to bother you but... and I can tell you I have had people help me out more than once and I always let them know how much I appreciate their help.

When I put my phone down for a bit to get offshore I always set up my emails and vm to let people know I am not available and can not get messages. I leave them information of who can help them.

When we are closed for the weekend, or a holiday between the emails, voicemails, and all of the messages it can be quite time consuming just playing catch up. And the far, far majority of the ones who just can't wait well they aren't really that important and certainly can. And the ones that are seem like they are the most apologetic. Even when you reassure them it is fine and that is what you are there for.
