Eggs

Eggs, it isn't eggs. It is EGERYTHING. When I look at what we spend on groceries I am like...Are you serious? What in the world did we buy? Even when running in places to pick up just a few things you need to take a baby aspirin to prepare. Higher prices are hitting almost everything we buy. It certainly hasn't made me feel great about doing many of the things that we used to do when going out. Just from my own conversations with people I think there are many people who are feeling the same exact same way.

Recently on the news I have been hearing of people exhausting their savings, tapping into their retirement accounts, using their credit cards more and more. Car repossessions on the rise, interest rates much higher. And it seems like it just keeps coming and coming.

Recently talking with a friend who is in the mortgage business he was telling me how many people are refinancing their homes? I was like you have to be kidding? Why on earth would they refinance their homes now? He explained most of these were people who had a HELOC home equity line of credit, that now have had those interest rates increase drastically. He said even with the higher rates on the primary loan it is giving them a much lower payment monthly.

Consumer spending is slowing down even more as people are dealing with rising costs. I think about purchases much more now and if I really want to spend money on something that I don't absolutely have to spend it on. At work recently I spent some money on something that wasn't a must but I really wanted to do it. I had the money to pay for it and in the long run it will probably pay for itself but I tell you I had to think about pulling that money out to do it. Where as before I wouldn't have thought twice about a purchase like that.

I had a older customer come in and sit down and start laying into me about the price of something going up. Normally I can look things over and find a way to try to address it and most of the time we have tried already. I asked him for a minute so I could look over things and saw that we attempted to call him and sent him a post card to have him contact us. While I was reading he kept right on going about it. Well I slightly lost my cool with him. I let him know every single bill I have is going up too. I let him know that I understand where he is coming from and yes I am frustrated as well. I could tell I shocked him by the way I snapped back at him. This is someone I have talked to for close to 20 years. I went over things with him and gave him a couple options to try to get the price down some. Then I think it hit him he wasn't mad at me or frustrated at me. He was just frustrated and he was taking that out on me. We talked for awhile longer shook hands and he went on his way. I kind of thought about it and it bothered me a bit and I was going to give him a call. When I got in the office there he was. It had bothered him too. We chatted for a couple minutes and I think both of us felt much better.

Stuff is expensive! That doesn't give you permission to be a jerk to people. It can get frustrating! But again there is no reason to be frustrated to a person who is just trying to help.

There are a lot of things to be frustrated about but there is so much more to be thankful for.

David
