A "Race" Just For Kids

By Michelle Nelson

January 11, 2024

Is one of your goals for the new year to become more active? How about for your children? I think most people would agree kids need more physical activity and here is a terrific event to put on your calendar this spring.

Rob’s Run for Kids, in its 7th year, is Saturday, March 2, at EVO Public House. It will be a big running weekend in Salisbury, as the Tim Kennard River Run, a 10 miler and 5k, is the next day.

Kids from ages 2-10 are invited to “race” that day in distances from 50 yards to a half mile and each will receive a medal at the finish line. The race will have all the feels of a regular race, but pint-sized. A section of Eastern Shore Drive next to EVO will be blocked off for the event, with Salisbury Police Department officers on hand for traffic control.

Kids will be treated to popcorn and a variety of snacks, costumed characters, and a guaranteed fun event.

The race begins at 2 p.m., with registration just beforehand from 1 to 1:30 p.m. The entry fee is a donation of any size and all funds raised will benefit the Robert Schultheis Memorial Scholarship at Salisbury University. Schultheis, a well-known local runner who deeply involved in his college alma mater, was tragically hit while out on a Friday night run in 2015. The community came together immediately to support his wife and children and several races are hosted annually in his memory. “Live Life Like Rob,” LLLR, became a movement, capturing his zest for life. The ongoing scholarship campaign has made it possible to award yearly scholarships to SU education majors, as he was.

The following day is the Tim Kennard River Run in its 19th year. Choose the 10 mile run, 5k run or 5k non-competitive walk. All races start and finish from Salisbury Bible Fellowship on Pine Bluff Road that Sunday morning. Tim Kennard was 48 when he passed from kidney cancer in 2004 and the run has been held in his memory ever since. Find all the details here
