Big announcement from Shop Local Delmarva!
Shop Local Delmarva will award $1,000 to a student majoring in the trades this September. Applicants must be either a senior in high school studying in a vo-tech program or a 2023 high school graduate or GED graduate who is attending a trade, technical, industrial, or vocational program.
“We want to reward someone in the trades industry, because without the trades, it’s impossible to keep the lights on, our cars working, our water flowing and our AC blowing,” David Galeone, Shop Local Delmarva’s founder. “This money can be used by someone just beginning a career in a skilled trade.”
More and more employees are struggling to find help these days especially in areas such as HVAC, plumbing, construction, painting and welding. Trade schools don’t have the same expenses as a four-year college, but education still costs money, along with purchasing required tools of the trade to get started.
“Learning a trade is an excellent way for younger people to learn and advance their careers,” Galeone said. “By offering a scholarship, we can help jumpstart someone’s career and we all know what goes around comes around.”
To apply for the $1,000 Shop Local Delmarva Trades Scholarship, students must:
*either be a 2023 high school graduate or have a GED or be in their first year of trade school.
*submit a 500-1000 word essay telling us about yourself, your career plans, why you are interested in a particular trade, and your work ethic.
*submit a high school transcript/GED photocopy.
*be a resident of Wicomico, Worcester, Somerset, Dorchester, Talbot, Caroline, Accomack, Sussex or Kent counties.
Submissions will be accepted through Aug. 31, 2023.
Applications should be submitted in one email, with attachments as needed, and sent by August 31 to
info@shoplocaldelmarva.com.
Entries will be judged by a team of community members from Shop Local Delmarva, including several in the trades. Please write SCHOLARSHIP ENTRY in the subject line. Provide your full name, age, home address, phone number and full contact information. We look forward to your entries!
The recipient will be announced approximately October 1.
